Frigid February!!

February 17, 2017

Greetings from Room 116!

What a windy, wintry few weeks we have had!  I hope that everyone is managing to stay safe and warm during this chilly period. Despite the cold air and snow days, we have accomplished a lot. Here is a brief outline of all our great work:

ELA: We finished our realistic fiction books and began designing game boards to go with them – a fun way to enhance our comprehension.

Math: We started our fraction module and learned that the denominator always tells us the number of equal parts in the whole, while the numerator tells us how many parts.

Science/SS: We began investigating different biomes. This research will serve as the basis for a long-term writing project.

Other: We concluded our engineering projects in Library and worked on related Google Power Points during Technology.

We ended the week with a pizza party and class viewing of “Milo and Otis,” a lovely movie about friendship, perseverance, and courage.

Best wishes to all for an amazing February vacation! See you on Monday, February 27th.

Sincerely,

Ms. Feeney

P.S. Remember to read over vacation and record your activities!!

Happy February!

February 3, 2017

Greetings from Room 116!

It appears that we are in for a long winter, according to Punxsutawney Phil. Nevertheless, we will be going outside for recess whenever possible, so thank you for making sure that students are appropriately dressed.

Meanwhile, inside our classroom, we are keeping very busy:

ELA: We discussed how characters evolve and change over time in our realistic fiction book groups. We also examined the importance of setting in our community book Babe, the Gallant Pig.  In addition, we studied “schwa” spelling patterns, along with additional verb tense grammar rules.

Math: We calculated the area of compound shapes in several different ways.

Science/SS: We created alliterative food chain posters. We also expanded our understanding of Pilgrim life, while adding to our 2-column notes.

Other: We continued our engineering projects in Library and worked on Google Docs, Zearn, and Study Island during Technology.

Best wishes for successful Super Bowl weekend. Go Pats!!!

Sincerely,

Ms. Feeney

P.S. Remember to always read and practice math facts!!!
